Sesame Street

PBS, PBS Kids, Noggin, etc. - constantly

Do yourself a favor. They just released a kickass dvd set called Sesame Street - Old School, Vol. I (1969 - 1974), and don't tell your kids the show is still on the air. They will survive without Elmo, I promise. And they'll be better off.

I used to love this show. I grew up on it, I watched it with little kids, and then a few years passed and I had my own. Well folks, the block has changed a little. For one thing, I'm pretty sure Big Bird is retarded. I keep wondering if they dumbed him down over the years to make stupid kids feel better. And Mr. Snuffleupagus? Everyone can see him now. He's also retarded. And he has a family, so occasionally we're forced to tolerate another one just like him with a dainty hat or a bow. Cookie Monster eats vegetables in addition to cookies. There's a character called Baby Bear who calls himself Baby Beaw.

They still have those cool pieces about kids in other countries, though, and you can still find Grover, Oscar (who looks after a worm named Slimey), and Maria's still on, although she's ancient and her acting has gotten horrible. (Was it always that bad?) They still have Bob! And they still have great celebrity guests. I saw Norah Jones singing "Don't know why Y didn't come" about the letter y, James Gandolfini confessing his fear of haircuts and the dark, Robert De Niro method acting for Elmo, and Patti Labelle singing a rockin' alphabet song. But you know what? The show's just not that fun anymore. And there's no Kermit!

So like I said, go get that dvd set. Even if you don't have kids, go get it. Why aren't you getting it? Why aren't you online right now buying it? What's wrong with you?
