The CW - Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. I confess, I'm obsessed with this show. I will watch any episode from any season at any time. VH1 has them, the CW has the new ones (although we're between seasons at the moment), and I'll watch each and every one. Re-runs too. And marathons rule. Why do I love America's Next Top Model? My top twelve reasons:
1. The cult of Tyra. I love the way they all shriek whenever she walks into the room. I love that she seems really smart and grounded when she's in the room with them, by comparison. I love the way last season's apartment was decorated exclusively in pictures of her. And I love when she has special projects to get the girls involved in, culminating in joyful creations like her very first (and likely last) music video. 2. The fabulous lines that get dropped in every show, from "you just have to model through it" to "if you're not going to pose nude you might as well work at a car factory!" 3. The hilarious shoots they make them go on. I still think my favorite was the one where they had to hold plates of birdseed and stand still like statues while they were being attacked by filthy pigeons. Thank you, Tyra, for pre-emptively punishing future generations of annoying models just like you. 4. The "My Life As A Cover Girl" spots featuring last year's winner, which suggest that Nicole and Danielle shouldn't be expecting extensions of the one-year contracts they won. 5. The makeovers! There's always one chick with ass-length hair who cries. And there are always about ten others there to make fun of her. 6. The drama. There's just something really fun about watching an argument in which everyone's an idiot. 7. The re-staged moments, and the ones you can tell were stitched together in the edit room. The basic reality show rule applies: if you don't see their lips moving, what they're saying has been snipped, chopped, cropped, and rebuilt. And some of the lines they make them say are so obvious it's cringe-worthy. (And worth a rewind on the tiVo.) 8. The tomboy. There's always one who can't walk in heels, doesn't know how to wear make-up, and makes it into the top 5. 9. The eliminations. "Congratulations, you're still in the running towards becoming America's next top model." It's such a mouthful! And I love the part at the end where Tyra says, "The name I do not call must immediately pack her bags and go home," and then says both of the finalists' names anyway because she has to give them their critiques. 10. The tears. Whether it's talking about the Tsunami, or fearing for Tyra's health when she "acted" and fainted, it rocks. 11. Tyra's acting. Feels kind of like a constant audition, doesn't it? 12. All the words the girls don't understand. Remember the one when they had to read from a TelePrompter? |
